The National Collage Society, based in Hudson, Ohio, was founded in 1981 with the goal of advancing the stature of collage as a major art medium by providing opportunities for exhibition, workshops, lectures, and publications. Collage has evolved from one piece of paper glued onto a painting into many types of mixed media. Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso were two major artists to first use glued layers in their paintings. The annual juried exhibition, which is international in scope, features an extraordinary range of compositions, accompanied by a full color, illustrated catalogue. This annual exhibition has been hosted at institutions in Ohio, Washington, and New England we are pleased to broaden exposure for this genre by presenting this installation where it is accessible to audiences in the Northeast.

Hilary Sheeter

News from Hilary Sheeter:
  • Congrats are in order to Maggie MacGrainor and Harriet Elson for their paintings "In the Beginning" and "Life on a Gossamer String" being accepted into the prestigious Ohio Watercolor Society 2006 juried show. The show opening will be September 23 at Firelands Association for Visual Arts at Oberlin College. Way to go, Maggie! Way to go, Harriet! Your talents are overwhelming.
  • Sue Birgeles and Hilary Sheeter are taking the OWS workshop by show juror Steve Quiller at Oberlin College, August 14-16. Hilary will likely try to find out why his painting was rejected!
  • In May, Bev and Hilary drove to Arizona for 3 weeks. Along the way they stopped in Oklahoma City to visit the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. The highlight of the entire trip was seeing Lowell Smith's Prix-de-West winning painting (circa 1990) along with other magnificent paintings. This museum is a must-stop-and-see for anyone traveling that way.
  • Paintings by Maggie MacGrainor, John Bender, and Hilary were featured in the St. Paul's Church on W. Market St. in Akron during May and June. Hilary won the Best of show ribbon. Congratulations, Hilary!
  • In November, Hilary will teach art classes on the Princess cruise ship Regency out of San Juan, Puerto Rico to Acapulco. Let's hope nothing goes awry with the steering system as happened recently on another Princess cruise ship.
  • Concerning Art on the Green, Cathy Welner and Hilary wish to thank everybody who helped with the mailings to the 145 exhibitors. As the show dates approach, there is much work to be done. We anticipate a better-but-no-bigger-than-ever show on August 26 and 27.

Judy Carducci

News from Judy Carducci:

1. I participated in the en plein air paintout on the Hudson green, sponsored by Hudson Fine Art and Framing. It was wonderful to be painting out doors again and I was all fired up to continue when I was suddenly felled by that rotten flu that's been rampaging around. It took several weeks for me to get my energy back. See the results of the paintout in the gallery in the Brewster Mansion.

2. My self portrait, "Role Reversal" (the Artist's Manikin Paints Me) has been accepted for the annual national exhibition of the Pastel Society of America at the National Arts Club in New York City in September.

3. I'll be teaching the Portrait Academy for the Portrait Society of America at the Richeson school of art in Wisconsin Sept. 29 and 30. For details, go to www.portraitsociety.org.

4. I'll be teaching a 4-day portraiture workshop at Cuyahoga Valley Art Center Oct. 5-8. Participants will work in the medium of their choice. (NOTE: this is NOT a pastel workshop.)

5. I'll be teaching a 10-day workshop in southern France October 23-Nov.1. We will spend half the time painting en plein air in medieval villages and farmers markets and half the time painting portraits of local people. Participants will work in the medium of their choice. For details, go to www.greatpastels.com and www.hautbaran.com. For a book about the area and a restaurant where we'll be eating, read "From Here You Can't See Paris", available in paperback at Borders.

6. My self-portrait, "The Widow," is in the article "Fostering Artists", in the current issue of Akron Life & Leisure, and a photo of me doing a demo at the Portrait Society of America convention in Dallas last May is on the cover of the current issue of International Artist. My painting, "Studio Sink With Lava Soap" and my portrait of "Tom With Cue" will be in the Nov. issue of The Artist's Magazine in an article entitled "Projecting & Art," and the Jan. '07 issue of the Pastel Society of America's publication, The Pastelogram, will have a feature article by me entitled "How Do We Keep Growing as Artists"?

7. I've been appointed as the first female artist to serve on the board of the Portrait Society of America, where I chair the Cecilia Beaux Forum, dedicated to the encouragement and support of women artists. See www.portraitsociety.org.

Barb Zohn

News from Barb Zohn:

  • Darlene Jackson, Susan Graham and I just returned from a great painting trip in Stonington, Maine. We had a little bit of every kind of weather - rain, fog, sunshine and we painted through all of it.
  • Next, Darlene, Harriet Elson and I will be heading to Rockport, MA the first part of September for another painting trip. We will be meeting up with Toni Slick who now lives in Ormond Beach, FL and was once a member of HSA.
