2012 starts off right away on January 2 with a much-anticipated watercolor demo by Hilary Sheeter. Come watch as he demonstrates his unique technique.

The rest of 2012 continues with an outstanding line-up of programs. All programs are held on Monday evenings at 7:30 p.m. at the Barlow Community Center, unless otherwise noted. Programs are free and open to the public. Please join us and bring a friend!

Caricature Demo by Scott Hall

Scott Hall, a well-known caricature artist, gave a demo for us on Nov. 21. What fun! He drew and talked all evening, telling stories about how he got started doing caricatures, how he keeps up his skills, and the tools he uses. He's an entertaining speaker and a wonderful artist.

He graciously drew each person in attendance and sent us home with the drawing as a souvenir.

We are happy to tell you that a longstanding member of the HSA was recently voted into the Ohio Watercolor Society as a full signature member.

He was honored, along with other new Signature Members, at the Annual OWS Banquet that was associated with the 2011 Ohio Watercolor Society Show.

This year the show is being held in Zanesville, Ohio from September 17 until November 23. George has a painting that is being exhibited in the juried watercolor show. The painting is titled "Clown with Rose" and is the fourth painting that he has had accepted for showing in the Annual OWS Show in recent years.

The 2011 Art on the Green show is off to a fantastic start! Saturday the 27th was a beautiful day - sunny, clear, and comfortable. The gorgeous weather brought out art appreciators in record numbers. Sunday also promises to be another beautiful day.

More than 140 artists are participating in the show this year. Each has been hand-selected for their quality work, and so that the show remains fresh and varied. Even if you've come to the show in past years, you're sure to see something new this time.

The show is held at the southeast corner of Rts 91 & 303 in Hudson. Admission and parking are free. Sunday's hours are from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Governor's Office Art Exhibition

Dear Ohio Artist:

We are contacting you today to tell you about a wonderful exhibition opportunity. Since 1985 the Ohio Arts Council (OAC) has assisted in placing artwork by Ohio artists and Ohio cultural institutions in the Governor’s Residence and throughout the Governor’s offices. Governor John Kasich and his staff have contacted the OAC with the desire to continue this tradition of displaying Ohio artists’ work in the Governor’s office located in the Vern Riffe Center for Government and the Arts in downtown Columbus.

We are contacting Ohio artists who work in painting, drawing, photography and mixed media for this year’s exhibition. A landscape theme has been selected and the goal of the program is to feature images that represent the various regions of the state. Only two-dimensional work is being considered due to the space limitations within the Governor’s office.

A panel representing the Governor’s office, two museum/gallery directors and a member of the Ohio Arts Council staff will jury the submissions. All works should be available for a one year loan from time of selection. Artists interested in submitting artwork for consideration should complete the attached form and send a disc of images of the available pieces to the address below.

The deadline for submission is April 22, 2011. Please send all information to:

I came across an article in an artist's marketing newsletter titled "Ten Reasons for the Emerging Artist to Join a Local Art Group" written by an emerging artist in Toronto. I'm reposting it here since I think it speaks to the value of groups like Hudson Society of Artists.

Ten Reasons for the Emerging Artist to Join a Local Art Group

In the past year, I have joined two local artists groups. Both are located in the city where I live, Toronto, and both have small membership fee and no jury process to join in. The first (the Israeli Artists Group of Toronto) is specific to my background and culture and the second (the Artists’ Network, Riverdale, Toronto) is more geared towards helping member artists in the marketing of their art.

I have seen many benefits for myself, and for the other members of these groups, in joining and becoming members. Many of the advantages require the member’s participation and being a social-animal. In my case – schmoozing, not being shy about introducing myself, telling the other members what I do, take an interest in what they do, try to help, and more. To me it really works and it will continue working and growing.

So, I wanted to summarize and share with you 10 of the reasons why you should join a local art group. Here I am trying to talk to artists like me – either emerging, or “straggling”. Although I hate the word “straggling”, I am sure you all know what I mean. We try hard, we try our best, but we still need that day job to keep going. So, with these benefits, and many other things we do, one day we will make it and not be straggling any longer!

OK, here we go, the 10 reasons to join a local art group for the emerging and straggling artist:

1. Socialize – get out of your lonely studio. I have heard it a lot from other members how being an artist can be a lonely thing, being “stuck” in the studio for many hours, not working in an office environment with other people and water-fountain small talk opportunities. The local groups will usually have socializing meetings where you can meet other artists and just get out there.

2. Learn – see what other people are doing and learn from them. The variety of artists and experiences can really make for an excellent place to learn from other artists – talk with them about the way they tackle the business side of being an artist, find who is giving workshops and attend them, or in many cases, come to a group meeting where one of the artists is presenting their art and techniques.

3. Share your knowledge – teach other people from your knowledge. If you can learn from others, than there must be something you can teach from your experience. What about art making techniques, marketing ideas, utilizing technology or art shows experience?

4. Network – meet people who know other people, in order to enlarge your network. Networking cannot be underestimated. Getting to the right people, such as gallery owners, curators, collectors or licensors, can be done through a network of friends with similar goals. And although it might seem that the other artists are your competition, the truth is that many are more than willing to share and connect you to the right people.

5. Opportunities – One of the end results of growing networking is the opportunities that emerge from many unexpected places. There are many opportunities to be taken, you just have to identify them and make yourself ready for them to call you. You can find new opportunities for business, commissions, art shows, exposure and much more.

6. Participate in art shows – many of the local art groups organize group shows and, in some cases, they are not juried. This is an excellent way to start exposing yourself and your art and to start building your resume. The juried art shows are even more important, as their quality is often much higher. Getting to know where the art shows are, what their requirements are and who might participate in them are all integral parts of the local group activities.

7. Volunteer – give your time and efforts for the benefit of you and others. You will gain respect of your fellow artists and they will be willing to help you in return.

8. Practice – with the many activities that happen throughout the year at the group and volunteering opportunities, you will have the valuable opportunity to practice. Participate in arranging shows, see what happens behind the scenes and learn what is involved. This will give you a great practice that you will need for your own business development.

9. Expose yourself – let people know you. There is no better way to sell your art than to be known. And you have to start somewhere. Your local art group can be one such place, where you expose who you are, what drives you, make friends and become known in the local area and community. That will also give you the sand-box playground to practice exposing yourself to the rest of the world, like your clients.

10. Write about it – write your experiences in your blog. It will be a great topic to write about and local searches will rate high in SEO (Search Engine Optimization). When you meet other artists, write about them, discuss the group’s events, art shows and other promotions - you will get better local results for searches. The search engines do look for localization relevancy and being part of and writing about a local group is a wonderful way to do just that.

I hope this list helps you make a decision and join a local art group. You might already belong to a group, or more than one, and nodded in agreement while reading this list. Or you might not have any particular group in your area that fit-the-bill, so maybe start one…

This is the demo in progress from last night HSA meeting. We watched as Marilyn applied the acrylics and used different techniques to texturize, shape and control the paint.

The relationships of shape, texture, and color all contribute to the creative action that gradually becomes the expressive concept.

With this series of paintings Marilyn shows us the anatomy of an abstract. She explaind how each stage was painted and how she built up the colors and forms. In the final panel she used white Gouache to form the negative spaces.

Stewart's Caring Place, a non-profit cancer support center. They sponsor the Holiday Boutique which has become a local fall tradition. This year they will hold the event at Fairlawn Community Center, 3486 S. Smith Road. The Community Center has plenty of parking, is easy to access and will provide better visibility. 52 Weeks 52 Works is AGC's annual desk calendar showcasing 52 different works of art corresponding to the 52 calendar weeks. The calendar has served as a stage for the creative community of Northeast Ohio for the past 8 years. The calendar seeks to demonstrate the power of expressing ideas effectively through print and the myriad of collaborative opportunities available with Northeast Ohio's creative community. Previous collections have ranged from sculpture to painting, photography to ceramics.

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Submission:

When is the submission deadline?
The deadline for submission is October 1, 2010. Please forward this information if you know of other artists who may be interested.

Is there a fee to participate?
There are no exchange of monies – we don’t pay you and you don’t pay us.

How often will my artwork be used?
If selected, your artwork will appear in the 2011 Calendar. We do not use the your artwork for any other promotional purposes (aside from the calendar).

Will you return my submitted materials?
Any hard copy items supplied (slides, prints, or original artwork) will be returned to you when the calendar is complete. Any digital submission or CDs will be destroyed after publication.

Will I receive a copy of the calendar?
Each participating artist will receive 2 copies of the calendar. These calendars will be shipped via UPS to the address you supply on your submission form.

What is the preferred method of submission?
Digital submissions of at least 300 dpi at 5 x 7 inches burned to a CD and mailed to us along with your completed submission form or uploaded to our FTP site is the preferred format for submission. Our FTP site can be accessed via our Website. Please enter your information in the white box at the right. In the Subject Box please enter 52 Weeks, in the Message Box please enter your full name and the title of your piece.

May I submit more than one image?
You are welcome to submit multiple images, but we do ask that each image is accompanied by it’s own submission form.

Can I purchase additional copies of the calendar?
Upon completion 2500 calendars will be distributed to local Companies and Non Profit Organizations throughout Northeast Ohio. Every artist who submits will receive 1 calendar and every selected artist will receive 2 calendars. You may contact AGC in January to inquire if additional calendars will be available.

Peninsula Art Academy will keep the gallery open from 11am - 11pm on Saturday, August 14, 2010 for Peninsula Home Day. The Plein Aire Show and Sale is open for this one last evening only. Fabulous paintings of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park are still available at very affordable prices!

Home Day is an Old-fashioned street fair with live music,

food vendors, dunking tanks for politicians, Policemen grilling sausages and Firemen selling beer. 5k run, 8am, and carnival, noon – 3pm both at the school. We’ll close Mill Street at 6pm for live music and dancing in the street!

Sally Heston has a painting in the Butler Museum of American Art "2010 Mid-Year Show" this summer (until the end of August). She also has received word that she will have a painting in the Pittsburgh Aqueous Show later this fall,at the Fein Art Galleries in Pittsburgh)and the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society Show (at a gallery in in Warren, PA) - also later this fall.

Cathy Welner, Maggie McGrainor, Barbara Zohn, Don Getz, Linda Hutchinson and Kitty Waybright had paintings accepted into the Watercolor Ohio 2010, 33rd Annual Juried Exhibition. The juror was John Salminen.

Karen Martin co-wrote a children's story and did the illustrations. It is available thru Xlibris.com and the title is "The Life of Riley, why am I so big?".
The story is about her Irish wolfhound, and how awkward she found things to be because of her size, but realized she was special, and did therapy work with hospital patients and young children reading to her at the library.

The show included sculpture, drawing, wood carving, painting and collage. HSA members brough two awards back to Hudson.
Kathleen Harrington won Best Acrylic Painting for her piece "Flamingos" and Lucy Karslake won a Special Merit Award for her pen and ink drawing "Klinger Gate".

Seeing Green:

Creating Art in an Era of Sustainability

The Artists Archives of the Western Reserve, a nonprofit visual arts organization dedicated to preserving the art and art history of Ohio and its artists, invites all interested local artists to submit original art entries for its upcoming exhibition, “Seeing Green: Creating Art in an Era of Sustainability”. The show, to be held June 11, 2010 through July 16, 2010 at the Artists Archives, has two principal goals: 1) Create awareness among Cleveland artists about sustainable art practices and possibilities so they may create art using ecologically responsible materials, processes, and techniques and infuse their artwork with environmental concepts and, 2) Promote a wider public understanding of green artistic practices and ecological responsibility and sustainability as it relates to the visual arts.

Through the exhibition, the AAWR hopes to heighten awareness of environmental issues surrounding art and encourage the use of alternative, more earth friendly “greener” methods to art creation. Accordingly, submissions must address the theme of environmentalism and sustainability in one of two ways: a) artworks must be created using non-toxic materials, reclaimed, recycled, or otherwise ecologically sound materials and/or processes, OR conventionally created artwork should thematically focus on environmentalism and sustainability as it relates to the visual arts. In short, the AAWR is calling out to all artists in our area to display artwork in the AAWR gallery of which the earth will be proud.

Green:

Entry Due Date: Saturday, May 8, 2010 no later than 4:00 p.m.

Any entries submitted past this time will not be considered.

Participation Rules:

1. Electronic submission of the application form and images is preferred; however, paper entry forms and CDs will be accepted but are non-returnable. Electronic applications should be sent via email to artistsarchiveswest@yahoo.com with “GREEN SHOW” in the subject line. Images can be in BMP, TIFF, JPG, or PDF. Any submissions of slides or hard copy images will not be considered.

Please identify your work and name on each submission.

2. Artists may submit up to three (3) artworks for consideration.

3. Artists should include a detailed statement for each submission describing materials and processes employed and its relevance to sustainability.

4. This juried exhibition will feature a single winner who will receive an honorarium.

5. Show entry is free to members of the AAWR; non-members are required to include a nonrefundable $15 entry fee with their application. Payments can be made using the Pay Pal option on the AAWR website, by phone with a credit card, or a check with an entry form via U.S. Mail.

6. All artwork entered must reflect or encompass the concepts and/or qualifications stated at the top of the page. All work must be original creations.

7. Exhibited art must be for sale; the AAWR will retain a 40% commission if sold.

8. Application does not guarantee acceptance into the show. Invitees will be notified by May 15, 2010.

9. Artists are encouraged to be present at the opening reception on Friday, June 11, 2010 to explain their art and processes to visitors

10.Artists are responsible for packing, shipping, insurance costs, handling expenses and risk of loss or damage incurred in the delivery of artworks to and from the Artists Archives gallery.

Art Show in Kent

Main Street Kent is hosting the 4th annual Masterpieces on Main Art & Wine Festival Saturday, June 5th 2010.

The event will be from noon until 10 p.m. Local wineries will offer wine tasting on the Home Savings Plaza and on adjoining North Water Street. Artists will display their art surrounding the plaza and on North Water Street.

Last year's event drew a record crowd of wine and art lovers! We have secured space this year to double the size of the event. Six wineries have signed on and there is space for 78 artists. Increased media exposure throughout Northeastern Ohio will contribute to another successful event.

We are currently looking for artists who are interested in participating in this years event. Booth fees for a 10 x 10 booth space are $35 and $20 for students. After May 25th fees increase to $50 and $40 for students. There are no commissions for this event. Artists are responsible for their own tent and necessary display tables and backdrops. Water and electrical service is not available.

Since this years event is from noon-10 p.m. set up is Saturday from 9:00 to 11:30. Please have your booth ready for customers by 11:45 pm. Sally Heston's painting took first place in the WAL show which is being held at St. Paul's Church on West Market Street in Akron. It runs from now until the last week in April (2 months!). Kathleen Harrington has two paintings accepted in the 25th Annual Miniature Art Exhibition at the Council for the Arts of Chambersburg Pennsylvania."Ocean Surf" was accepted as was "Morning Light" which won an honorable mention. The Travel Exhibition of The Ohio Watercolor Society kicks off its trip around the state with a month-long stop in November at The Medina County District Library sponsored by The Medina County Art League and includes many weekend demonstrations that are free and open to the public. This exclusive travel exhibition is made up of 40 paintings by Ohio’s foremost watercolor artists, award winners and paintings selected by juror Cheng-Khee-Chee from Watercolor Ohio 2009 held earlier this year. The exhibit can be seen at the main branch of the library in the third floor atrium and can be seen during regular library hours. The library is located at 210 S. Broadway Street, Medina, Ohio 44256. The Akron-Summit County Public Library is pleased to be hosting a FREE workshop on Grantseeking Basics for Individuals in the Arts

If you are an individual involved in the arts and looking for funding to complete a project, mount an exhibition, put on a performance, conduct research, or anything else arts-related, this workshop will show you how to identify funders supporting individuals working in the arts. We will also touch on grantmaker motivations in funding individual artists, and the variety of support options available.

Tonight for our first meeting of the year, we had an oil painting demo by Larry Churski . An accomplished illustrator and painter Larry has studied with Don Stone, Richard Schmidt and Lowell Ellsworth Smith.

Larry chose to paint Hudson's Barlow Farm and used one of his own watercolors of the farm for quick reference.

Call to Artists - The Art of the Figure at PAA Enter today!! entry form

Show runs Sept. 19 thru Oct. 17, 2009. Opening reception will coincide with the Members’ Picnic on Sat.,

Sept. 26 from 5-7pm. Plan to stay for BluesNite after the reception, our monthly open jam session! Throughout history, artists have learned by drawing and painting the figure from life. PAA would like to show how current artists view this traditional subject. Submissions should show the artist’s interpretation of the human form and may be representational or abstract, in any media. Pieces may depict clothed figures or nudes, but all pieces should show sensitivity and respect for the human figure and tasteful subject matter. entry form

Call for Trustees: The Peninsula Art Academy is searching for candidates interested in serving our non-profit organization as Trustee: we are in dire need of a secretary! This person would attend the meetings, currently held on the second and fourth Wednesday at 6:00 pm, take notes, type them up and email them to the board. The secretary also creates the agenda, and email’s it out, as well as meeting reminders and helps write up a few reports at the end of year. The Board of Trustees is comprised of volunteers who meet twice a month to govern the affairs of the organization. Although there is no paid compensation, you will benefit by learning about general non-profit business administration and by contributing to the arts and culture in Northeast Ohio. No previous board experience is needed, but a working knowledge of art education or general business management will be desirable. Please submit your name for consideration by return email ASAP.

Congratulations to Miller Horns who will receive the AAAA Arts Alive! Outstanding Visual Artist Award in November! Celebrate Miller’s achievement and the opening of Artists of Rubber City’s new gallery on the third floor of Summit Artspace on Friday, October 2, 2009. The opening reception for the gallery’s inaugural show, featuring work by Miller Horns, will be held from 5 to 7 p.m.

Also opening at the same time will be Photo2009 at Summit Artspace.

The AoRC Member Show is coming up! The second exhibit in the new gallery space will feature work by Artists of Rubber City members. An opening reception is planned for Friday, November 20. Kaleidoscope will open at Summit Artspace at the same time. Further information will follow at a later date.

Image Transfers for Collage and Assemblage, with Gretchen Bierbaum, Saturday October 3, 2009, 10am to 3pm. (It’s also Peddlers Day - how appropriate!) Gretchen will teach teach five new transfer techniques to make collages. Students should bring copies of family photos (antique are the best). We will not use the original photos and only a copy machine print will work for transfer into a collage. Computer printer copies do not work. While making the copies on paper, also make a few on transparent acetate. Well-behaved children are invited to sign up with a parent. $60 or $50 for PAA and National Collage Society Members. register here

Cups of Kindness: A Benefit

Artists are invited to offer a Cup of Kindness (1-3 pieces) to those in need, through a show and sale of small-scale work in Peninsula, Ohio, to benefit the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank.

This event, in it’s second year, is the vision of Debra and Stephen Bures, owners of Elements Gallery in Peninsula, and will be co-sponsored by Peninsula Art Academy, the Peninsula Area Chamber of Commerce, the Cuyahoga Valley National Park Association and the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railway.

Artwork may be functional or decorative and may represent an artist’s interpretation of a “cup of kindness”:

•two-dimensional works must be no more than 8 ½ by 11 inches, and be ready for hanging.

•three-dimensional pieces must be less than 7 inches tall, and 5 inches wide and deep.

Cups of Kindness premieres on November 27, 2009.

A Meet the Artist’s opening reception will be Saturday, December 5, 2009 at Elements Gallery and Peninsula Art Academy from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm. Participating artists will be listed on the website,and will be linked to their own sites if applicable. This show will run thru January 10, 2010 from 11-5, Thursday thru Sunday. Special times may be arranged, please call to make arrangements.

Please submit your donated artworks before November 6, 2009. Items received before this date will be photographed by Ron Wayton for inclusion on the Cups of Kindness website, and will be for sale on-line, with the artist’s name featured http://www.cupsofkindness.net.

Please include a description of the donated items, including materials, techniques and value, along with the artists’ name, address, telephone number and e-mail address. A portion of your donation may be tax deductible.

Celebrate Summer with Cari Miller at City|Art Gallery

Akron, OH: Akron artist/photographer Cari Miller is inviting art and music lovers to have some “fun in the sun” during the opening reception of her work at City|Art Gallery, Falls River Square, downtown Cuyahoga Falls on Friday, July 24, from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Miller will be showing a mix of 25+ original acrylic paintings, mirrors, photographs and prints that all celebrate the joys of summer. The reception will feature local guitarist/singer/songwriter Dave Hammer performing from 6 to 7 as well as light refreshments. July 24 is also the first night of the Festa Italiana, which will feature music, food and games of its own.

“Between the festivals, fountains, boat rides and car shows, Falls River Square offers ways to have fun all summer long,” says Miller. “My work at City|Art Gallery – bright, heavily textured sun face paintings, seaside photos and summer-themed mirrors – is designed to complement that.”

The exhibit runs Thursday, July 23 through Monday, Aug. 3. Hours are Wednesday-Friday 3-8 p.m. and Saturdays 12-8 p.m. or by appointment.

Miller has been working for the last 20 years in different facets of the arts in Northeast Ohio. She is currently showing her work at the Log Cabin Gallery in Peninsula, weekends through July 19.

Art Quilt Magic: An Introduction with Connie Bloom, Saturday July 11, at 3pm, Wednesday, July 15, at 6:30, and again on Friday, July 17, at 11am. Please attend any one program. Join studio quilt artist and former Beacon Journal columnist Connie Bloom, who will explain the transformations quilts have made since great grandma's heydays and unfurl a trunk show of gorgeous quilts she has stitched. Art quilts hang on the wall, not on a bed, and look like paintings but are made of fabric and embellishments, such as buttons, beads and cording. They can be hand stitched or sewn on a sewing machine, which is Connie's preference, and be abstract or representational. Anything that can be drawn or painted can be made into an art quilt -- flowers, pets, landscapes, people

Peninsula’s First Annual Plein Air Competition - Along the Crooked River was held Saturday June 20th and Sunday June 21st. 2009, and was truly amazing!

The exhibit of works created will run July 2 thru July 26, 2009, Thursdays thru Sundays, 11 am until 5 pm at Peninsula Art Academy.

An Artists reception will be held at PAA on Thursday evening July 2, 2009, 5 to 7 pm.

Hudson Art Show in the News

The Hudson Society of Artists has joined with the Hudson Garden Club's annual Home and Garden Tour Garden Shop and Tea to present members' paintings in its annual Clothesline Art Show and Sale during Hudson Festival Days.
Hudson's Antiques and Collectibles also will join the show.
All three groups will be together for the third year at the Hudson Middle School, 77 N. Oviatt St., June 18 through 20 from noon to 5 p.m. each day.
Each day there will be approximately 300 paintings on display for sale. Most of the paintings are realistic watercolors with a few oils, acrylics, and drawings. Many of them are floral still lifes, landscapes and Hudson scenes. The paintings will be unframed, matted and wrapped in protective plastic. A few canvas pieces will also be available ready to hang.
The paintings will range from $20 to $200, but most of the paintings will be under $75. Approximately 30 members participate in the show and are allowed to enter up to 12 paintings each.
Ten percent of the proceeds from this and other annual shows the club sponsors each year benefit HSA's scholarship fund, The Margaret Roby Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded each year to a senior Hudson High School art student. This year's $2,500 award went to Amy Breedon.
