News from Kathleen Harrington
This month I am the artist showing work at the Gallery at the Hudson Library. I hung 24 paintings there and they will be on display for the month of November.
I currently have two pieces in the 28th Annual Exhibition Miniature Art 2012 sponsored by The Council for the Arts of Chambersburg, PA. The opening of this show was the same evening as the Ohio Collage Society Member’s Exhibit at Studio 2091 in Cuyahoga Falls where I was exhibiting a collage. There were so many wonderful entries at the Collage Show from Ohio artists!
And on that same evening there was the opening reception of the Chagrin Valley Art Center 41st Annual Juried Art Exhibit. 93 pieces were accepted from the 300 entries and I’m thrilled that my painting “Quiet Evening” was included.
The Fall Members Show of the Women’s Art League of Akron is at the Brecksville Center for the Arts Nov 5 – Dec 21 and I am showing two florals there.

News from Judy Carducci
North Light Books has just published a handsome new book, "Strokes of Genius 4: the Best of Drawing, Exploring Line." Several of us area artists are in it: Tricia Kamen, Mitzi Lai, John Smolko, and me. It's an interesting and varied collection, beautifully presented.
PLAN AHEAD for FRANCE:
I will not be teaching in France in 2013, but will be back there at the same gorgeous place for the full ten days July 28 thru August 6 (leaving Aug. 7), 2014. So that gives people who have wanted to take advantage of this opportunity almost two years to plan. The Domaine du Haut Baran has expressed the intention of celebrating my 80th year at that time. I have just returned from this year's workshop there; images of my paintings will be on my web site as soon as we have enough light to photograph them.
GREECE:
for those of you who have always wanted to see Greece and to do it in comfort, style and with artists, I will be teaching a 10-day plein air and cultural workshop in Athens, Delphi, Mycenae, Napthlio, and Sounion, May 13-22, 2013. We will be staying at wonderful lodgings, with a Greek guide, and painting in breathtakingly inspiring spots.
Old San Juan, PUERTO RICO:
For those of you who would like exotic warmth nearby and near the end of a cold long winter, come to my workshop in Old San Juan, February 3-9, 2013. See the article, "Plein Air Paradise," in the last Workshop Issue of American Artist, about my workshop there last December.
My paintings from prior trips are on my web site, www.judithcarducci.com. For details and to enroll in upcoming workshops, go to www.signilar.com.

News from Deanna Clucas
Deanna continued teaching Truly Beginning Watercolor classes through July. Classes begin again in September at Brecksville Center for the Arts. Intermediate classes will also begin at Richfield Recreation Center in September following her trip to France for a painting workshop with Fred Graff.
Her one-woman show at Akron Woman’s City Club’s Gallery 732 which ended August 30 was a huge success.
She participated in the first fundraiser for the GriefCare Place of Stow at the Portage Country Club. The event was an art auction and sale to benefit the organization which offers care and grief support services.
Her list of art shows includes the WITAN French Market, Medina’s Art in the Park, Akron Arts Expo, Hudson Art on the Green, and Ohio Mart. And then there were also CVAC Members All Media Show, the annual Plein Air Painting Competition as well as River Days Plein Air Painting in Munroe Falls where she met the mayor while painting at Brust Park.
She also showed in Ohio Watercolor Society Regional Show at CVAC.
Just got word that her painting “Reflections” will be at the Millworks Gallery for the Akron Art Prize Competition sponsored by the Margaret Clark Morgan Foundation and the Downtown Akron Partnership. Big prize money for the winners will be determined by texts submitted by the public.
Although it has been a busy year, she is looking forward to her presidential duties for both the Women’s Art League and the Medina County Art League.

News from Nina Robishaw
I am presenting my watercolor paintings in The Hudson Art on the Green show and The Kent Art in the Park show this year.
I teach watercolor painting once a week to the ladies at The Rockynol Retirement Community, and I am an adjunct professor for Kent State University Art Dept where I supervise student art teachers during their elementary and secondary internship assignments.
I attended the workshops of Jan Mettee at HSA, Cathy Welner at Cliffside Museum in Hinckley this year, and I have reserved a spot at Cliffside for Alvaro Castagnet's workshop next year. Aside from regularly painting at home, that's about it!

Portrait of James Ellsworth
Have you seen this elegant gentleman around Hudson lately? He is a famous Hudson resident, whose portrait currently resides outside Hattie's Cafe along Clinton Street in the center of town.
James Ellsworth was an influential resident of Hudson in the late 1800's and early 1900's, who helped restore the town after a series of fires and economic problems had left Hudson in serious trouble.
His life-size and life-like portrait has been donated by the Hudson Society of Artists to grace our downtown. The artists who painted and installed the artwork - Lucy Karslake, Paul Adams, and Shannon Casey - donated their time for several months to research the subject, prepare sketches, work with the building's owner and the Hudson Architectural Review board, plus do the actual painting.
The artists used a style called "trompe l'oeil", meaning "fool the eye". Paintings in this style are very realistic, giving the illusion of three-dimensional space.
The painting was done on outdoor signboard material with acrylic paint and then sealed with acrylic varnish. It was installed over an old boarded-up doorway that was one of the first sights visitors saw coming into town. Now, Mr. Ellsworth is waiting to greet them.
When you're in Hudson, stop by Hattie's Cafe for a snack, browse the gift shop, then pop around the corner and give a wave to Mr. Ellsworth.
Click the map below for directions to Hattie's Cafe at the corner of North Main Street and Clinton Street:

Clothesline Art Show, June 2012
Hudson Society of Artists will host its 49th annual Clothesline Art Show in conjunction with the Hudson Home and Garden Tour on June 14-15.
The Clothesline Art Show will feature a wide variety of small original artwork created by HSA members. Paintings will include original watercolors along with some oils, acrylics and drawings. Pieces are unframed, matted and wrapped in protective plastic. Approximately 250 pieces will be on display for sale, ranging from about $15 to $200. In addition, visitors can also watch an artist demo by HSA president Lucy Karslake.
The show runs:
Thursday and Friday
June 14-15
10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Visit the Clothesline Art Show at the Hudson Middle School, 77 N. Oviatt St., also the site of the Hudson Garden Club’s Garden Shop and Tea Room. The Clothesline Art Show is free and open to the public.
At the first show in 1963, students of Hudson artist Lowell E. Smith hung their paintings from a clothesline on a porch on Division Street. Today, the clothespins are clipped to aluminum panels but the spirit of the show continues.
Ten percent of the proceeds from the Clothesline Art Show and other annual shows that the group sponsors benefit HSA’s scholarship fund, the Lowell Smith/Margaret Roby Memorial Scholarship. Each year the award is presented to a senior Hudson High School art student.
