December 1 Meeting

The next meeting on 12/1 will present Sandy Dennison with 'Black, the Forbidden Color'.
She would like this to be a paint along so bring your oils, acrylics, colored pencils, pastels or watercolors and a black ground. If you bring watercolors, bring a tube of white guache or white tempora to make it a bit more opaque. I have done this with Sandy before and it is great fun. WE will try to have some guache or tempora there for those who forget.

from Aof RC:

Tammy Jo Fuller and Gary Fossaceca have pieces in the new "Toying with Imagination" exhibition at the Akron Art Museum! The exhibition is in the Corbin Gallery and includes 100 or so photos taken with toy cameras. The show runs through January 11, 2009. Museum hours are: Tuesday through Sunday - 11AM - 5PM, Thursday - 11AM - 9PM, Closed Mondays. It is a great exhibition and features a glass showcase with some vintage toy cameras on display. We hope you'll all be able to go!!!
Gary has some pieces hanging at the Viking Vineyards Winery on Old Forge Road in Kent. His work will be displayed in the Lake View Hospitality Room beginning the first week of November. Several other artists are included in this exhibition, too.
To get to the winery take I-76 east to exit 532 (exit #29 - Mogadore, Tallmadge), turn right on 532, turn left at the first light (Newton) and Viking Vineyards is about a mile down on the right... There is a sign directing you to the winery. The driveway back to the winery is a one-lane gravel road.
The hours are: Tues. thru Thurs. 5PM to 9PM, Fri. & Sat. Noon to 11PM, Sunday 1PM to 8PM. The wine here is amazing - especially the Red Kiss which is a chocolate-flavored red wine. They have some new wines, too - including an ice wine which is available for tasting. Let us know if you're going out and maybe we'll meet you. Gary's work should be up for a month. Thanks and we hope you can make it out!

Haunted!!

Creative Ghosts & Goblins Fill Summit Artspace
for Halloween Weekend

(Akron, OH) – Ghosts and goblins will be truly creative this Halloween weekend thanks to a scary group of Akron area artists. Eight top professional artists and four young, emerging artists have put their devilish talents together to build an eerie art installation called Haunted Artspace. It will be open to the public Friday, October 31and Saturday, November 1 noon to 9 pm and November 6-8 noon to 5 pm at Summit Artspace, 140 E. Market Street. Admission is a $2 donation.

Members of the creative coven are Mark Soppeland, Donna Webb, Joseph Blue Sky, Joan Colbert, Laura Bidwell, Leandra Drumm, Inda Blatch-Geib, Miller Horns plus art students Dan Coffield, Kevin Smalley, Rachel Gentner and Bonnie Stipe.

This is not the typical haunted house with costumed chainsaw killers and axe murderers jumping out from dark corners. These talented people have used their refined aesthetic sensibilities to create a true work of art that just happens to be very mysterious. Visitors will wend their ways through a creative world of creepy corners, cupboards and crevices. The installation is made possible with contributions from FirstEnergy Foundation and University Park Alliance. The building is in the University Park neighborhood.

Also on display at Summit Artspace is Fresh & Spooky, a gallery exhibition of 91 frightening works of art created by artists from Summit, Portage and Medina Counties. Sponsored by OMNOVA Solutions Foundation, this exhibition is free. On Saturday, November 8 from 1-3 pm, artist Ardyse Mund will present a free workshop titled Looking Closely at Trees.

Summit Artspace is located at the corner of E. Market and Summit Streets, one block from the Akron Art Museum. Established in 2002, it is a project of the Akron Area Arts Alliance in cooperation with Summit County government. Its gallery presents seven exhibitions per year and is dedicated to displaying works by local artists. There is free parking behind the building off Summit Street.

Local Art Show

Here's a note about an upcoming show:
from Springfield Township Women's Club (45 members). "We are a service organization and we will be having our 35th Autumn Arts & Crafts Show on Saturday, November 1st. It will be held at Springfield High School located at 2966 Sanitarium Rd. (Canton Rd.) Lakemore, OH. It is Juried. We have between 2700-3200 people attend (we know because we charge $1 admission). Our vendors do an awesome business.

I would love to speak with some of your artists regarding buying a $40 booth to display some of your art. This would benefit both your group and bring awareness to southern Summit county and bring some variety to our bazaar. You can put as much art in your booth as you can fit and keep refilling as you sell. The hours are 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The vendors set up on Friday after 4:00 p.m. We have a huge cafeteria that day and free parking for the event.

..... the time is getting short. Please call me at 330-830.3693 or return e-mail me or contact the bazaar committee at: Cindy Howe (330-699-1815 howefore@aol.com) Pam Clayton (330-699-4279 Sluggger2000@cs.com) Chris Bolyard 784-7088 galeswife1090@aol.com). They can better help you as they are the committee. they know the booth sizes, proceedures, etc. They can e-mail you the entry form and expedite the process.
Thanks, Teri Vasile.

Lowell Ellsworth Smith 1924-2008

Lowell Smith passed away on Monday, August 11, 2008 around 10:00 in the morning.

The memorial service will be Friday morning, August 15, at 11:00 at The First Congregational Church in Hudson.

Address: 47 Aurora St.
Phone: 330 650-4048

Watercolor painter Lowell Ellsworth Smith was born in Canton, Ohio in 1924. Smith and his sister Barbara grew up in an artistic household; his father, Ellsworth P. Smith, was the art director for the Hoover Company and a painter, and his mother was a pianist. Smith’s father encouraged his interest in art, and during Smith’s childhood the family took many trips to art colonies, which helped nurture his artistic inclinations. Smith was a 1942 graduate of Lehman High School in Canton where he studied art and was the drummer in the school dance band. After attending one semester at Miami University of Ohio, Smith was drafted into the U. S. Army Air Force. He served between 1943 and 1945 in England, France, and Germany with the 45th Air Depot Group. When he returned from Europe, he picked up again at Miami University, graduating in 1948 with a B.F.A. While at Miami he also played drums with a dance band. Smith later gained additional schooling through the Famous Artists School of Westport, Connecticut.

Smith worked for many years as a commercial illustrator with Canton Art Service and Manning Studios in Cleveland where he specialized in “pretty girl illustrations for advertising.” He also did cover illustrations for children’s coloring and activity books published by Saalfield Publishing. In 1960, after 12 successful years as a commercial illustrator, Smith turned his attention to fine art figure and landscape painting in his favorite medium, watercolor. Among those Smith names as teachers and influences to his watercolor technique are his father, Roy Wilhelm, Don Stone, Tom Nicholas, and Paul Strisik. Smith turned his attention to the West after 1970 when artist Ramon Kelley noticed one of his paintings at an Ohio art show. His association with Kelley led to his first painting trip to Colorado and New Mexico and an introduction to western collectors and gallery owners. In 1979, Smith joined Kelley, William F. Reese, and Tim Stortz on a painting trip to Oaxaco, Mexico that resulted in a joint exhibition at the Frye Museum in Seattle. Over the years, Smith returned to Mexico repeatedly, and Mexican churches and street scenes are among his favorite subjects.Smith was an invited artist at the 1978 and 1981 National Academy of Western Art (NAWA) shows, and his painting Church Façade—Plaza del Oriente won the Prix de West Purchase Award at the 1983 NAWA show. Smith’s work has also been shown at a number of other art shows in the West, Ohio, and elsewhere. Hundreds of art collectors, including former Texas governor John Connally and Oklahoma oilman T. Boone Pickens, have purchased his paintings.

In 2001, the Canton Museum of Art exhibited a 58-piece retrospective look at the artwork of Lowell Ellsworth Smith and his father, Ellsworth P. Smith.

Lowell was a past president of Hudson Society of Artists and he will be deeply missed.

There are no calling hours. The memorial service will be Friday morning, the 15th., at 11:00 at The First Congregational Church in Hudson. The church is at 47 Aurora Street, Hudson. For directions call 330 650-4048.

Something Spooky!

info@akronareaarts.org
For Immediate Release Contact: Jessie Raynor, Director

Summit Artspace news in this release:
· Gallery is looking for fresh, new art with a SPOOKY theme
Artworks for consideration due September 23
$1,000 in prize money to be awarded
Call to Tri-County Artists for HAUNTED Art

(Akron, OH) – “Fresh & Spooky” is the new title and theme for Summit Artspace Gallery’s fourth annual juried exhibition offering significant cash awards to local artists. The gallery is looking for works of art that are unearthly, ghostly, mysterious, weird and uncanny. (No guts, gore or chainsaws, please.)

OMNOVA Solutions Foundation has underwritten three top-place prizes of $500, $300 and $200. Selected works will be on display at the downtown Akron gallery from October 3 to November 8.

Artworks for consideration must be delivered to Summit Artspace Tuesday, September 23 from noon to 7 pm. Pieces must be “fresh,” which means created in 2007 or 2008 All types of media – paint, ceramics, photography, glass, metal, mixed -- are encouraged, as well as two and three dimensional art. There is a $10 entrance fee.

Artists, who live, work or attend universities in Summit, Portage and Medina Counties are eligible. Interested artists can request an application with details by calling the Akron Area Arts Alliance at 330-376-8480 or online at www.summitartspace.org. Only one entry per artist will be considered.

The exhibition’s guest juror is artist Mark Soppeland, who will also hang the show. He warns that works selected will be displayed in unorthodox ways to enhance the spooky theme. “It may take on the appearance of an exhibition installed by poltergeists,” Soppeland said. Distinguished Professor of Art at the University of Akron, Soppeland’s paintings and sculpture have been shown in over 300 solo and group exhibitions on four continents.

Summit Artspace Gallery, located at 140 E. Market St., is a project of the Arts Alliance in cooperation with Summit County government. It presents seven exhibitions per year and is dedicated to displaying works by local artists. Admission and parking are free. Hours are Thursday-Saturday noon to 5 pm.
